Trump’s newest warning to introduce an extra complete levy on items imported from China has been called a “typical example” of American hypocrisy, per the China’s leadership.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry further commented that the nation could enact its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the White House occupant carries out his warning, noting that the country was “fearless” of a possible trade conflict.

This past Friday, Donald Trump retaliated at the Chinese government’s action to tighten its regulations for foreign shipments of rare earth minerals, charging the Chinese leadership of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “hostage”.

Additionally, he threatened to withdraw from a planned meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping, which was arranged for a summit in South Korea before the month ends.

His statements on that day unsettled financial markets, with the S&P 500 share index dropping nearly three percent, marking its biggest drop since last spring.

His comments revived fears of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.

This past spring, the two sides had consented to eliminate significant levies on each other’s goods, which had raised the prospect of trade halting between the two nations.

Consequently, United States levies on products from China incurring an extra import tax compared with the start of the year, while American products entering China are subject to a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – issued by the relevant government department in the form of formal replies to journalist’s questions – reflected language from the zenith of the recent trade conflict.

Officials denounced American limits on exports on semiconductors and chips while defending the country’s own restrictions on exports on rare earths as “routine measures” to protect national security and that of the global community.

Their representative said that for “a long time”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, exploited export control measures and “adopted biased policies against China.

“Using” import duty warnings is not the correct approach to interact with the Chinese government,” the official stated.

“Beijing’s stance” on a tariff war has always been consistent: we are not seeking one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Last week, the Chinese government revealed it was strengthening overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and additional substances essential to cutting-edge industry.

This move was regarded as a significant step, as the state refines about 90% of the global rare earth supply, which are employed in items such as solar panels and mobile phones.

Latest statements from both governments are being seen by some as a strategy of enhancing bargaining power in preparation for forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, planned at a summit in South Korea in the coming weeks, will still proceed.
