Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team might be building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
