Senate Greenlights Measure to Release Jeffrey Epstein Documents

The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of official records associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House changed course after months of trying to delay the bipartisan effort involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Approval in Congress

Senators proceeded by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.

The public have waited long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” the top Senate Democrat declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Let the truth come out. Let transparency reign.”

Future Action

This legislation next goes to Trump for his approval. He signaled on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though the president has for months downplayed the controversy over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the measure over the weekend, and announced he would approve it if it comes to him.

Support and Opposition

Democrats, along with those affected and their advocates who were watching from a public section, broke into applause after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he was concerned the measure would disclose personal information of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
